Sounds like you have done some great work. It seems the 'modern' education system fails anyone who can't take notes, remember stuff and regurgitate it on their own. I have come across countless people at work who left school and could hardly spell. Also, some who could not add up, divide or multiply at a very basic level. Like you, I ended up teaching one-to-one (I used flash cards for the maths). It's such a waste of human potential.
