Leaders: Keep Your Team on Track by Giving Crystal Clear Instructions
Quick Leadership Tips #9
Have you ever been in a situation where expectations change at work so often that it’s hard to know what you should be doing?
I have, and it’s very frustrating.
As a leader, it’s up to you to make sure that your team knows their goals and priorities so they can get on with their work.
Regular one-to-one meetings (preferably weekly) are the best way to ensure everyone is up-to-date with any priority changes.
In the one-to-ones, ensure that your team member knows what tasks are due by when, why the deadline is important, and the consequences to the organization if they miss the deadline.
Consequences may be fines, missing bid deadlines, or budgetary or tax implications that your team must be aware of.
Ask your team member if they need any resources to complete the task on time and if there is anything (or anyone, think other departments needing to be more timely) that will stop them.
Book regular updates with your manager, too, so you are up-to-date and can immediately pass on any changes to your team.
